Text description provided by the architects. The Hub is the public face of the new campus at Heslington East masterplanned by BDP. It is the gateway through which visitors will enter the campus, and as such is the most significant building on the site. It is conceived as a forum, with multiple activities under one roof, and is accessible from all sides with no distinct front or back.
The key elements of the building are broken down into discrete spaces and clustered together within the 800sqm atrium, and unified by an oversailing, single span timber roof.
A fully glazed elevation to the south provides views to the lake and vale of York beyond. This lakeside edge has a timber deck terrace that gives access to individual study pods ‘floating’ on the hub basin, sheltered by the overhang of the roof which dips to meet the water.
